WHAT?  Soulscapes

WHERE?  Dulwich Picture Gallery, Gallery Road, London SE21 7AD

WHEN?  Now until 2nd June

WHY GO?  For a voyage of discovery.  Traditional landscape paintings we know and love are more than likely rural, furrowed fields and rolling hillsides, but the gap widens when it comes to the creative vision of today's contemporary black artists who interpret landscapes they know and love with a strong sense of identity and deep connection with ‘home’.

This tightly curated multi mix of paintings, collage, textiles and video focuses on the work of artists from the African Diaspora and includes some deeply personal interpretations, often gloriously joyful, often moody and meditative.

The power of landscape imagery is presented with a fresh eye from names that need no introduction, like Michael Armitage and Isaac Julien who show regularly in the UK, but it’s the names we are less familiar with like Che Lovelace and Phoebe Boswell that invite us in to rediscover how transformative it is to gaze at tropical greenery or watch life unfold on an East African beach.

The inspired title encapsulates the exhibition’s core theme, for every image has a ‘soul’!
