PETER DOIG

WHAT?  Peter Doig

WHERE?  The Courtauld Gallery, Somerset House, Strand London WC2R ORN

WHEN?  Now until 29th May

WHY GO?  For an air of mystery.  Little known outside an ardent fan base where his artworks fetch millions, Doig is an artist who projects a dreamy interpretation of life.

This small but punchy show is atmospheric, hovering between portraying nostalgic family groups, brooding figurative images and a colourful tribute to his love of the Caribbean.

Scottish born Doig moved to Trinidad 20 years ago where he took up an artist’s residency with Chris Ofili in 2000 and the island’s rich musical culture is firmly embedded into his work.

Back home now in North London, this show highlights his newest works including an especially poignant painting of his son on the Regent’s Canal tow-path, a far cry from the sparkling blue waters of the sunny Caribbean.

It’s strangely disquieting, but pop across the corridor afterwards to soak up the glorious uplifting Impressionist Courtauld collections for light relief.
