WHY GO?  For a thirst quenching sip of knowledge.  Milk! We take it for granted, know it comes from cows, but how do we get it, why do we need it and how has it become a critical commodity, even a political symbol?

This fascinating exhibition reveals some surprising facts in an engaging way through artworks, historical objects, social reform campaigns and first-hand testimonies, even a hanging sculpture of a cow’s udder.

It questions what the future of milk might be through scientific reforms into farming on a serious note, but looks at cute shaped cow jugs from the 18th century on the creative side.

There are snippets of pure nostalgia from the 1950’s Welfare Food Scheme that distributed dried milk to mothers regardless of income to the controversial Thatcher, Thatcher, milk snatcher scrapping of free milk to school children in 1971, along with posters galore that reinforce the health benefits of drinking milk.

IN THE KNOW The Wellcome Museum highlights health and offers everyone an opportunity to explore wellness issues through their programme of free exhibitions and events.  View their static displays for free, visit the library, or enjoy their informal cafe.
