LEGION

LIFE IN THE ROMAN ARMY

Gold coin, Oath taking scene between two soldiers. c The Trustees of the British Museum

WHAT? Legion: Life in the Roman Army

WHERE? The British Museum, Great Russell Street, London WC1B 3DG

WHEN? Now until 23rd June

WHY GO? For a Roman odyssey.  If you think life is hard today, consider what it must have been like way back in Roman Britain.

This is an authoritative but ‘fun’ romp through history seen through the eyes of a soldier in the Roman legion.  From the humble foot soldier to high ranking centurion, or one of the esteemed Equites in the much lauded Roman cavalry, everything is recorded and it is riveting.

Aimed at imparting facts with humour, the exhibition is tied in with Horrible Histories to appeal to young history buffs with pit stops highlighting gossipy facts with interactive activities.

The biggest surprise is how heavy a Roman shield actually was; visitors can barely lift the shield replicated, let alone imagine running into battle carrying one.

From life in a Roman camp (evidently the toilets were horrible) to life on the battlefield, everything has been documented through the 200 or so artefacts that have been excavated over the centuries.

Theatrically staged with an atmospheric sound system, it instantly evokes a sense of what greeted the Romans as they forged ahead conquering the globe.

True, ‘Rome wasn’t built in a day’, but you might well need a day to truly absorb this exciting blockbuster and will come away in awe at their astonishing military might.

IN THE KNOW Engage the whole family in history infused with humour.  From 12 -16 February, there are numerous free family activities inspired by the exhibition, guaranteed to create a buzz around half-term.  Drop in at various locations across the museum on a first come-first served basis.
