WHAT? Leda and the Swan: A myth of creation and destruction

WHERE? Victoria Miro, 16 Wharf Road, London N1 7RW

WHEN? Now until 13th January 2024 Free to visit

WHY GO? For flights of fantasy. How do you portray a myth? Leda, the Greek Spartan Queen, was famously seduced by Zeus disguised as a swan, so the story goes, and it's one that gets retold by countless creatives, spawning books, plays, films and paintings.

While artists like Michelangelo and Leonardo were enchanted by the tale, it’s intriguing to view how artists today, fuelled by their own personal experiences, interpret the seductive story.

This daring and diverse exhibition does just that.

Sixteen contemporary creatives, from the film, sculpture and art world respond to Leda and the Swan with some racy revelations.

From the stark skeleton of a swan to the remains of a few floating feathers, some artists reference the violation while others are drawn to the beauty, embracing the theme of creation.

Flora Yukhnovich transforms the swan into a dove representing the Holy Ghost in a gloriously blowsy Rococo style.

It’s a dynamic show seen from sixteen perspectives and everyone allows their imagination to fly!
