WHY GO?  To commune with craftwork.  The therapeutic effect of watching a skilled craftsman at work can never be underestimated and to appreciate the final effort of something lovingly created is in itself a work of art.

The ancient craft of Kumihimo, the decorative art of Japanese braiding, is explained from its Silk Roads origins to present day usage in this inspiring exhibition.

As many as 140 hand-dyed threads, often made of silk, are intricately joined together to create panels and accessories, and the timeless way they are achieved are on show to ‘wow’ lovers of craftwork.

From Samurai armour to the beauty of an obi sash, the craft has flourished and is simplified today through our global passion for multi-coloured braid bangles.

Staged in conjunction with Domyo, a traditional Japanese company who have been making Kumihimo braids since 1652, it represents a slice of cultural history.
