JAPAN

My Neighbour Totoro  c1988 Studio Ghibli

WHAT? Japan: Myths to Manga

WHERE? Young V&A, Cambridge Heath Road, Bethnal Green, London E2 9PA

WHEN? Now until 8th September 2024

WHY GO? To spark creative minds. This cavernous space filled with light is always abuzz with excited children. Though you need a clear head to tackle the toddler play area, your inquisitive 7-plus offspring will be captivated by the first major family exhibition in this wondrous museum that reopened in July.

The focus is on Japan, the spirited land of folklore and animation and how it has shaped art, design and technology and it does not disappoint.

From traditional items like the kimono and netsuke to themed storied sections with games and animated excerpts from old favourites like Sailor Moon to My Neighbour Totoro that was a major hit staged by The Royal Shakespeare Company at the Barbican recently and is back for another run from November to March 2024.

If you grew up with PokemonTamagotchi and Hello Kitty graduating towards a diet of sushi and Manga, you will enjoy it even more than mini fans for it taps into everything we all love about storytelling and no one can tell a tale as magical as the Japanese.

Though the museum is free, an exhibition pass costs £10 but allows unlimited visits and is so worth it, for every trip will reveal something new.

IN THE KNOW  Linked to celebrating the Japanese exhibition’s four major mythical themes, sky, sea, forest and city, there will be half term events, hands-on family workshops and storytelling sessions throughout led by artists and makers. Check online for dates and details.
