WHAT? Hilma af Klint & Piet Mondrian - Forms of Life

WHERE? Tate Modern, Eyal Ofer Galleries, Bankside, London SE1 9TG

WHEN? Now until 3rd September

WHY GO? For a transcendental trip! Two artists, one mega famous Mondrian, one lesser known, but with a name as intriguing as it is to discover more about her, Hilma af Klint.

This shared exhibition is extraordinary. It suggests that both artists, who never actually met, followed the same path of enlightenment, starting out as landscape painters and progressing towards a spiritual abyss, drawing on inner powers to create their experimental abstract works.

Swedish born Klint wins us over for the sheer towering strength of her mystical paintings; some she claims were commissioned by her spiritual guide, Amaliel, which elevates her art to a whole new higher level.

Whoever, or whatever inspired her energy and talent, she was a force to reckon with and her symbolic paintings full of squiggles, swirls, flowers and dynamic geometric shapes makes for a show-stopping magical mystery tour.

IN THE KNOW: The Tate info tells us, “Both were visionary artists with a desire to explore the force of nature in an era of rapid change”, and indeed the world of séances and secret otherworldly gatherings versus scientific advancement played a part in prompting Hilma af Klint to contemplate the curious unknown.
