COALESCENCE

Coalescence by Paul Cocksedge, in the Painted Hall, Old Navy College

WHAT? Coalescence

WHERE? Painted Hall, Old Royal Naval College, Romney Road London SE10 9NN

WHEN? Now until 4th February

WHY GO? For a magic moment.  Let there be light!  And there is in abundance from this spectacular dome installation by acclaimed British artist Paul Cocksedge.  Resplendent in the glorious Painted Hall, often referred to as Britain’s Sistine Chapel, it contrasts yet compliments the hall's beautiful Baroque imagery.

Suspended from the Upper Hall, ‘Coalescence’ sparkles and captivates. But what exactly is it? A totally original sculpture made from over 2,500 pieces of coal, the amount consumed by a single 200w light bulb switched on for a year, states the caption, inviting us to consider our relationship with fossil fuels.

The shimmer is actually lustrous anthracite, a form of high-carbon coal, and if that’s all a bit too ‘scientific’, just sit back and enjoy the majesty of the whole final effect.

For geography nerds, the anthracite coal was sourced from Liverpool’s last remaining coal mine, accordingly the sculpture was first shown in Liverpool’s grand Cathedral last March.

Award winning artist Cocksedge is known for innovative design and has collaborated with international brands like Swarovski, Fendi and BMW and had his work shown in leading museums such as the V&A and MoMA.

Just entering the Painted Hall is a breath-taking experience, the addition of this shimmering sculpture just adds to the magic, which has to be seen to be appreciated.
