BRIAN CLARKE

Brian Clarke, Ardath,  (2023). ’ A Great Light’, Newport Street Gallery, Photo Prudence Cumming Associates

WHAT? Brian Clarke: A Great Light

WHERE? Newport Street Gallery, 1 Newport Street, London SE11 6AJ

WHEN? Now until 31st December. Free to visit

WHY GO? To be enlightened. This has the wow factor from every angle and thankfully the exhibition has been extended until the end of December.

If you primarily associate stained-glass with churches, think again. Today’s master of stained-glass art is the supremo Clarke who celebrates his 70th birthday with a whopper of a show in this stunning minimalistic gallery.

Blossoming meadows shimmer on glass illuminating the space and the impact is awesome, while on another level, graphic skulls create a more menacing presence. Clarke was fascinated by spiritualism as a teenager, which he claims is akin to art!

Showcasing the diversity of his work, there are also collages, drawings and screens of stained-glass reflecting the full extent of his technological creativity.

Over the years he has collaborated with the likes of leading architects such as Norman Foster and Zaha Hadid and even with celebs like Paul McCartney when he designed the stage sets for his 1993 New World Tour.

Meander through and trip the light fantastic!
