WHAT? Barbara Kruger: Thinking of You. I Mean Me. I Mean You.

WHERE? Serpentine South, Kensington Gardens, London W2 3XA

WHEN? Now until 17th March.  Free to view

WHY GO? For powerful words. To art directors, she’s a goddess.  To activists, she’s the ultimate feminist and to anyone who has never heard of her, Kruger’s work instantly packs a powerful punch as it provides commentary on issues that relate worldwide.

In the perfect pure white Serpentine space, her monumental slogans scream out from every wall and floor of the gallery to multiple soundscapes, and outside with banners, there’s even an emblazoned taxi to entice and confront.

This is Kruger’s first London solo show in over 20 years and it’s a MUST for recognising how words are a visual language that can ask and answer difficult questions.

After starting out as a graphic designer for American Conde Nast in the Seventies, Kruger, who is now 79, reigned supreme in the Eighties when every billboard featured her powerful graphics. Now she’s capturing the attention of a whole new generation who identify with her simplified language of personal pronouns boldly delivered which cut straight to the heart of the issue, whether it’s raging about consumerism or politics.

And as proof, Kruger has collaborated with Outernet Arts and will exhibit on the world’s largest wrap-around public screen by Centre Point in March which will undoubtedly create even more of a buzz for her buzz words!

IN THE KNOW For graphic nerds, the exhibition premiers Kruger’s three-channel video installation, Untitled (No Comment ) 2020, a multi mix of questions, quotes, ads and social media snippets, created from blurring online content focused to appeal to the tech savvy Gen Z gang.
