WHY GO? For a snap-shot of style. His name will be forever linked to glossy magazines, but Richard Avedon was more than just a ‘fashion’ photographer and captured intimate images that truly portrayed the personalities of his sitters which, according to Suzy Parker, was rare at the time, ‘He appreciated that models were more than just coat hangers,’ she enthused.

Avedon had a cinematic eye and photographed everyone who was anyone from the Sixties until his death in 2004, names like Andy Warhol, Coco Chanel, a whole clutch of super models and musicians like the late one and only Tina Turner.

This exhibition celebrates the centenary of his birth in 1923 documenting some rarely seen images.  Avedon picked up his first camera at the age of 12 and the rest is history as he redefined the face of modern fashion photography and inspired legions of followers.

The cult Avedon fashion image, recognised the world over, Dovima with Elephants, Evening Dress by Dior, Cirque drive , Paris 1955 sold at Christie New York in 2020 for over $1.8 million, a triumph for acknowledging the worth of photography as an art form.
