WHAT? Beyond Fashion
WHERE? Saatchi Gallery, Duke of York’s HQ, King’s Road,London SW3 4RY
WHEN? Now until 8th September
WHY GO? For ‘front row’ vibes. Elevated to the status of art, fashion photography is as much about the visual perception as it is about the commercial aspect.
Think of Peter Lindbergh and his stellar cast of smiling supermodels and how that iconic photograph has stood the test of time and is just as relevant today as it was in 1988.
More than a destination for fashionistas, this groundbreaking exhibition captures the progression of contemporary fashion photography and it’s beyond exciting.
Lindbergh’s famous quote, ‘fashion photographers are the new painters’ rings true as it beams in neon throughout the show for all to absorb.
The exhibition seduces the senses with huge saturated colour compositions from names like Koto Bolofo, Miles Aldridge and Erik Madigan Heck whose interpretation of Comme Des Garçons for the New York Times is nothing short of magical.
Giant images fill the walls as the show has been curated to flow through four distinct themes labelled, Allure, Fantasy, Realism and Surrealism.
Artist Dali would have loved Juergen Teller’s 2007 Marc Jacobs campaign with shoes, legs and bags akimbo while Picasso would surely have admired Ellen Von Unwerth’s 2004 poster Rich Bitch, of an elegant woman as she walks her dogs on the streets of Paris.
For added fashion buzz, homage is paid to image maker Nick Knight who established SHOWstudio as the home for fashion film, with an opportunity to glimpse into his innovative world. Prepare to be dazzled, this show creates a real fashion buzz .
IN THE KNOW Check Saatchi Lates from 6.30pm on selected Fridays when visitors can participate in timed activities and workshops related to the show while enjoying the exhibition at a quieter time.
