WHY GO? For a world class art experience. What could be more of an endorsement of London’s status as a capital for culture than for the world’s leading auction house to stage a tribute to artists whose work was inspired and created by their time in the capital?
This is exactly what Sotheby’s are offering. Twelve artists all born outside the UK and global mega stars in their own right have one of their most famous artworks on show in the auction house as part of a new mini exhibition project.
And it's free for all to view, so if you’ve never entered that hallowed house of fame, now’s your opportunity to rub shoulders with art experts and enthusiasts alike. It’s the beginning of new plans to make Sotheby’s more accessible to everyone who appreciates art and it’s working with visitors flocking to take a peek at Andre Derain’s Barges on the Thames (1906), Lucian Freud’s portrait of John Minton (1952) and Piet Mondrian’s Composition C (No 111), (1935) amongst other famous works that are on loan from galleries around the world.
All roads lead to London somewhere along the way for each of the twelve artists featured created each artwork in the city reflecting their love for the capitol.
Delving deep into the background of why and how those artists arrived in London makes this small show even more fascinating!
IN THE KNOW Check online for a full programme of events to complement the exhibition including a discussion with cultural experts led by Gus Casely-Hayford who will debate the role that London plays in shaping art and culture.
