WHAT? Fantasy - Realms of Imagination
WHERE? British Library, 96 Euston Road, London NW1 2DB
WHEN? Now until 25th February
WHY GO? To be bewitched. From fairy tales and myths to the weird uncanny world of Kafka’s Metamorphosis, our fascination with fantasy never wanes and this intriguing exhibition explores its history.
Along with ancient classics like Homer’s Iliad, it wanders through mysterious forests with The Brothers Grimm, down holes with Alice and her adventures in Wonderland, and for today’s fans who get their kicks from video games, concludes showcasing films like Game of Thrones.
This magical mystery tour is creatively staged, it’s a trip through the portals of fantasy.
Being the esteemed British Library, there’s an obvious focus on books with key first editions, scribbled manuscripts, maps and illustrated book covers from the bizarre to the beautiful.
Enchanting film clips transport us through spooky forests and creepy townscapes and video enthusiasts can engage with a video game based in the Fallen London world.
Inspiring and imaginative, Fantasy appeals to the inner child in all of us as we happily recall hours spent on mythical Neverland or watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Pure escapism, and an opportunity to question how our perception of fantasy is ever changing come the future.
