SENIOR FASHION & JEWELLERY BUYER - THE VICTORIA & ALBERT MUSEUM


When Michelle Ly left her native Brisbane for London, the plan was to spend two years exploring Europe. Retail positions with Myer and QAGOMA had helped fund eight years of study in Business Management and Interior Design and she was confident her 10 years + experience would help her find work along the way to pay for the trip. That was the plan, but 7 years later she is still living in the UK’s capital and temporary positions behind the counter have evolved into a full-time role as Fashion and Jewellery Buyer for the celebrated shops at the prestigious V&A.

In the past couple of years Michelle has played a key role in the commercial response to the museum’s exhibitions such as Balenciaga: Shaping Fashion, Fashioned from Nature, Frida Kahlo: Making Her Self Up, Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams and Mary Quant. But as exciting as these must-see shows have been to work on, her biggest project to date has been the overhaul of the fashion and jewellery offering in the flagship shop at the heart of the museum’s South Kensington site. Reopened in Spring 2017, the refurbished and reconfigured shop delivers crucial funds for the museum.

Michelle curates and sources products from established and upcoming jewellery and fashion designers and manufacturers and helps to develop ideas further with the V&A’s own creative community and design teams. Collectively they draw inspiration from the museum’s diverse collections… “The V&A is a treasure chest of wonderful art and design that draws a complex mix of visitors to the museum. Knowing what to range in our shops is no easy feat, but we’re always striving to source or create products that are innovative, witty, surprising and inspirational – products that could themselves sit in the V&A collections.”

Like a piece but have doubts? Then it’s not for you. Only buy something if you feel comfortable and it makes you feel great. But when it comes to accessories, be adventurous and don’t worry about fit. You only need to worry about being too fabulous!

Be bold with prints and mix them with block colours. A pattered top, skirt or scarf worked with plain block colours is easy to achieve and makes a big impact.

Buy second-hand clothing or invest in quality pieces that have a story. Whether it’s the quality of the fabric or a beautiful technique, choose pieces that you will wear again and again. We need to care about who made our clothes and accessories; we need to embrace slow fashion.

People always say I must have so many clothes... I don't! The key is to reinvent new combinations of what you already own. Don’t save pieces ‘for best’ - pair your best with your casual and enjoy your investments.

Decorate yourself with lots of accessories. Layer those necklaces, wear all your rings and add a beautiful scarf.
