BEST IN THE BUSINESS

kim winser OBE

FOUNDER & CEO - WINSER LONDON

You don’t earn an OBE overnight and Kim Winser’s contribution to the fashion industry is not only marked by her longstanding respect amongst Fashion Directors worldwide, but by the busy women who continue to buy her clothes year on year.

Born in Helensburgh, Scotland, Kim retired from a potential tennis career and focussed on fashion, becoming the youngest Board Director at Marks & Spencer in the 1990s.  Starting on its management trainee scheme, she raced up the ladder, fighting her way in a mostly-male area of the business and went on to be Chief Executive of Pringle of Scotland as well as CEO of Aquascutum.

“My career started with Marks & Spencer and there I learned very much about good value and reliability. Then I moved into the luxury sector: Pringle of Scotland – I don’t think there is much I don’t know about cashmere – and Aquascutum – we really know how to cut a raincoat!”

Add Agent Provocateur and adviser to Natalie Massenet at Net-a-Porter in the mix and Kim was more than ready to build her own business.

“I wanted to build a brand and create a brand that’s all about style and I wanted it to be stylish whether you were 20 and starting your career, whether you were 50 and sitting on a board or whether you were at home doing dog-walking or taking the children on the school run – developing the new entrepreneurs of tomorrow.  I wanted it to be stylish for real women and for busy women”

In 2013 she set up Winser London.  Designed to cut out the middle man, Kim’s attention was in the pieces themselves… “no partners, no agents - no money wasted between the fabric, the cut, the design and getting it to the customer”.  She created an online collection made with high quality fabrics for busy, ageless women who want to feel confident in the clothes they’re wearing.  She has collaborated with both Yasmin Le Bon and currently Gillian Anderson and now has three stand-alone stores.

‘I remember my mum saying to me “Just be yourself, Kim – just be yourself - because that’s the most important thing”.  And for me, I’m absolutely driven that I would love every woman to be really happy being herself. If we can give a little bit of help in terms of helping with the clothes, the styling, the dress, the packing…  Helping in any way to make a woman feel as good as she can, just from the clothes, then I’ve done a job.  For me, I love giving a little bit of confidence.’

KIM shareS HER expert tips on how to shop

Find your core wardrobe styles that suit your lifestyle and figure - good fitting trousers, jumpers and shirts and over time invest in a couple of shades of each. My personal favourite is our Audrey jumper, named after a stunning image of Audrey Hepburn.

Invest in a couple of great dress shapes that can work for day to evening, keep them simple and crease free, then add accessories depending on the diary date.

Add some fun into your wardrobe mix; it could be strong colour on colour or print on print, but don’t rush this purchase as you really need to love the look and feel good in it. Our Giraffe print looks great this Autumn.

Accessories often give away the quality of someone’s style. Less is more and go for simple quality, cashmere, pearls, and I love rose gold

The fashion cognoscenti know all Autumn looks finish with fabulous outerwear - if you only want to buy one thing, make it a statement coat.

IN THE KNOW

out ‘n’ about

JOKER

Comic book movies don’t come more dark nor gripping than Joker. Anticipation has been high for director Todd Phillips’ take on the original story for Batman’s arch nemesis and it certainly delivers.

An alienated and damaged Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) lives with his mother in a sleazy early-eighties Gotham City.  Beaten and humiliated, he spirals out of control, whilst struggling to control his mental illness and a condition that triggers involuntary fits of laughter. Therapy and his attempts at stand-up comedy are all failing to stop him from going over the edge, leaving violence and revenge to finally give him the identity and recognition he’s been craving.

Phoenix is outstanding, supported by Robert DeNiro, a chat show host - the focus of Fleck’s obsession. Aligned with with peak-Scorsese films Taxi Driver and King of Comedy, DeNiro’s presence certainly seems a nod towards them. Joker may not reach those levels of brilliance, but its attempt to bring something darker and more unhinged to the Superhero genre are well worth watching.
