CHIHULY AT KEW
WHAT? Reflections on Nature
WHERE? The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, Richmond, TW9 3AE
WHEN? 13th April-27th October
WHY GO? To wonder at ‘master of glass’ sculptor extraordinaire Dale Chihuly, who turns fragile glass into large-scale surreal shapes and to appreciate all 32 of them in the magnificence of Kew gardens, just 30 mins from central London. It’s like entering a halcyon world; the prized gardens are a Unesco World Heritage site. From the entrance at Victoria Gate to the Victorian Temperate House, there are sculptural surprises in store as giant dazzling glass installations burst forth like Spring bulbs.
IN THE KNOW American artist and glass sculptor Chihuly has had his fair share of drama. He was blinded in one eye after a car accident, dislocated a shoulder while body surfing years ago yet has constantly created celebrated glass installations the world over. It’s been 13 years since his work was last shown in Kew to great acclaim. He sees himself as a choreographer cum designer, heading up his dynamic team.
