WHAT? LEIGHTON HOUSE MUSEUM
WHERE? 12 Holland Park Road, London W14 8LZ
WHEN? Fully open until the end of 2019, check website for update
WHY GO? To appreciate the finest ornate craftsmanship and remarkable legacy left behind by Victorian artist Frederic, Lord Leighton who became President of the Royal Academy of Arts. He was no starving artist living in a garret. Leighton created a unique home of unparalleled beauty. It’s an architectural treasure combining Oriental, Arab and Pre-Raphaelite styles with a bit of Victoriana thrown in for good measure. In fact Queen Vic herself was entertained in the dazzling Arab Hall. A magnificent house, not least because the artists’ studio remains intact and provides a glimpse into his privileged world amongst the cultural elite of the era.
IN THE KNOW? Extensive restoration work is planned for Leighton House next year so visit before it closes for a refurb. This includes adding extra exhibition space to highlight the Museum’s heritage and reveal more about the unique Holland Park Circle of leading artists.
