HALSTON

WHAT? HALSTON  Director: Frederic Tcheng

WHERE?  Curzon cinemas and on general release from June 7

WHEN? From June 7

WHY GO?  To be transported back to the 70’s and the glamorous era of slinky dresses, spiky heels and Studio 54 where, according to Halston’s best pal and client Lisa Minnelli “His clothes danced with you”.  He dressed them all, the jet-set, the movie stars, the politicians’ wives. Halston started as a milliner in the Fifties and made the famous pillbox hat for Jackie Kennedy worn at the presidential inauguration which helped launch his fame.  He opened his own salon in 1968, the same year as Studio 54 and from then on, the two names would forever be linked.  Researching his life with actress/writer Tavi Gevinson playing archivist, the documentary uncovers rare footage and intimate interviews with family and friends.

IN THE KNOW? Halston knew how to market that famous surname, adding it to everything, from uniforms for the New York Police Department to costumes for Martha Graham’s dance troupe, along with legendary collaborations like the JC Penney contract that rocked his empire.  Uncovering intrigue behind the red carpet, fashion world, Halston is a film for all fashion fans and by the way, his christian name was just plain old Roy!
