DIANE ARBUS

WHAT? In the Beginning

WHERE? Hayward Gallery, Southbank Centre, 337-338 Belvedere Rd, London SE1 8XX

WHEN? 13th Feb - 6th May

WHY GO? Arbus is arguably New York’s most radical female photographer, whose work has to be seen, to be believed.  Most of the 100 photographs to be shown have never been seen in Europe before; she was never a conformist and always controversial, photographing oddballs and misfits on the edge of society, despite coming from a privileged background herself.

IN THE KNOW Tragically she committed suicide after many depressive episodes. Poignantly she wrote the words ‘Last Supper’ in her diary on the very day she slashed her wrists in 1971 aged only 48.
